What are Veneers?
Cosmetic veneers are ultra-thin shells of tooth-colored material that are cemented over the front surface of your teeth. They can change the shape, size, length, and color of your teeth. Veneers can be made from porcelain or composite resin material.
What Types of Cosmetic Dental Concerns Do Veneers Treat?
Dental veneers can treat several cosmetic concerns, including:
- Worn enamel
- Uneven teeth
- Discoloration
- Chipped teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Minor misalignment
How to Care for Dental Veneers
Though cosmetic veneers are durable, you need to make sure they are properly cared for if you want them to keep your smile looking. The best way to keep them looking white and clean is by treating them just like your natural teeth. That means flossing at least once a day, brushing at least twice a day, and seeing your dentist every six months for a check-up and teeth cleaning. You should also:
- Use a mouthguard when playing any contact sports
- Avoid chewing on hard objects such as hard candy, ice, and nut shells
- Don’t open plastic packaging with your teeth
- Don’t grind your teeth
Cosmetic Veneer Procedure
When you come in for cosmetic veneers, here’s what you can expect:
- Exam, diagnosis, treatment planning: The first step in getting your new smile is a consultation with Dr. Jeffrey Zackeru, DMD, where you’ll tell him the result that you are trying to achieve. We will examine your teeth to make sure dental veneers are right for you and discuss the procedure and some of its limits. We’ll also take X-rays at this stage to evaluate your dental health and look for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or the need for root canals. If you have any of these conditions, you may not be a candidate for veneers.
- Tooth preparation and reshaping: To prepare your teeth, we’ll prepare and reshape the tooth surface to create space for the veneers. The amount of tooth enamel removed is nearly equal to the thickness of the veneer – about half a millimeter of your tooth.
- Veneer Fabrication: After your teeth have been prepped, we will take impressions of your teeth and send them to the lab where your permanent veneers will be created. Next, you will have temporary veneers placed until your permanent set is ready.
- Bonding: Once your veneers are ready, we will place each veneer on your tooth to evaluate the fit, shape, and coloration of the veneers to make sure they’re perfect for you. Next, to prepare your tooth to receive the veneer, your tooth will be cleaned, polished, and etched. Etching makes it easier for the veneer to stick to the tooth. Dental cement is then applied on the veneer and placed on your tooth. Once the veneer is positioned correctly, your dentist will cure the cement with a special light causing it to harden very quickly, and once you leave the office, your new smile is ready to go!

Cost of Veneers
The cost of dental veneers varies depending on several factors, including the number of teeth you need to cover and the amount of preparation necessary before the procedure. Since most insurance companies consider veneers a cosmetic procedure, they will not cover the cost. We will go over the details of the procedure and the costs before you agree to any cosmetic treatment.
